Original World War II U.S. Army 2‑gallon canteen, produced for field hydration and larger unit water supply needs. Introduced early in the war, these canteens were used in campaigns such as North Africa where extended water capacity was critical. Some examples were reportedly repurposed in the field to help cool down machine guns during sustained fire.
